Encinitas is paradise found, embraced by the Batiquitos Lagoon in the north and the San Elijo Lagoon in the south. The city was incorporated in 1986 to include five communities that take pride in their own unique personalities.
"Historic Encinitas" fills the Highway 101 Corridor that parallels the beautiful Pacific Ocean and sandy white beaches. Neighborhoods have wide streets, sidewalks, and the true feeling of a town; shops, restaurants, and a converted school church that’s now the Town Hall all add to Encinitas charm. "New Encinitas" centers on El Camino Real ("The Kings Highway" founded by the early missionaries from Spain) east of the 5 freeway. This more modern development of Encinitas features shopping centers, condos and more of a suburban atmosphere.
"Cardiff-by-the-Sea" is made up of picturesque homes on hillsides overlooking the sea. The town center sits at the base of a hill. The area offers local entertainment and charming restaurants. "Leucadia" is famous for its giant eucalyptus trees that line the main thoroughfare, famous Coast Highway101. Residents live in medium sized homes and cottages. Those residences along the beach enjoy a spectacular view. "Olivenhain" ("olive grove" in German) boasts plenty of open horse country, pastures, and a rural way of life.
The commute to downtown San Diego is about 40 minutes. Encinitas offers wonderful parks, recreation centers and the Ranch Golf Course overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Ten beaches paint the coast of Encinitas over 6 miles of coastline and Surfer magazine named Encinitas one of the top ten surfing spots in the country.
